V DOCTORAL STUDIES CONFERENCE IN ART AND MUSICOLOGY

Department of Art History and Musicology

MACHINES ARE LEARNING MUSIC AND ART

APPROACHES TO TECHNOLOGY FROM MUSICA AND ARTS

The fifth edition of the Autonomous University of Barcelona Conference on Doctoral Studies in Art and Musicology will focus on the use of technology in music and art history research. The goal is to illustrate the use of these new tools, which are allied to researchers in the humanities, while showing how they are combined with more traditional methodologies. It is also intended to promote the debate around the confluence of new approaches that may derive from these uses, with other, more canonical ones, in the present and future of studies in history of art and musicology.

Technological advancements, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, have enabled the development of specific instruments that can support research in the twenty-first century, in which transdisciplinary collaboration must be promoted while responding to new academic needs in humanities study. Knowing and sharing tools, problems, challenges, and technological opportunities is crucial for the successful development of research with new instruments that are still in development. What should human-machine collaboration look like to encourage the creation of new forms of research in arts and music? Which are their limitations? Knowing where we are and which are the best paths to take is vital to rethink research in musicology and art history.
